Wimbledon 2025: Eight Top 10 Players Out in the First Round, a First in the Open Era
This start to the tournament at Wimbledon is somewhat surprising. On the men's side, 13 seeded players have already been eliminated after just two days of competition. In the women's draw, several upsets have also been recorded.
In total, across both draws, eight top 10 players have left the English capital prematurely—a first in the Open Era. Indeed, never before have so many players ranked in the world's top 10 been knocked out in their opening match at the same Grand Slam tournament.
Among the men, Zverev, Musetti, Rune, and Medvedev failed to hold their ground. On the women's side, Gauff, Pegula, Zheng, and Badosa suffered the same fate and will not compete in the second round.
As highlighted by the X (formerly Twitter) account *Jeu, Set et Maths*, the 2025 edition is now the Grand Slam tournament with the most top 10 players losing in the first round since 1968.
The previous record was also set at Wimbledon seven years ago. In 2018, seven players (four women and three men) fell at the first hurdle.
