Wimbledon: After a dramatic turn of events, Monfils will return to the court tomorrow to play a fifth set

The wild scenarios and surprises continue in this 2025 edition of Wimbledon.
Gaël Monfils, who narrowly won his first-round match against Ugo Humbert, is once again locked in a battle that will go to five sets. Facing Marton Fucsovics, a lucky loser, the French veteran dropped the first set before bouncing back to take a two-sets-to-one lead (4-6, 6-1, 6-4).
The fourth set saw the battle intensify, with Fucsovics initially racing ahead to a 3-0 lead before Monfils strung together five consecutive games to go up 5-3 and serve for the match at 5-4. Just when it seemed he could wrap up the encounter before nightfall, the world No. 48 surrendered his service game at love.
In the tiebreak, Fucsovics fired off a series of winners to clinch it 7-5, forcing a decisive fifth set.
The two players will have to return to the court tomorrow, as fading light made it impossible to continue. At nearly 39 years old, Monfils remains in contention to reach the third round of Wimbledon. A victory would mark the eighth time in his career he has advanced to this stage of the tournament.
