Cilic Upsets Draper at Wimbledon
World No. 4 Jack Draper was knocked out in the second round of Wimbledon, defeated by veteran Marin Cilic (6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4).
The British No. 1, considered one of the dark horses for the title, had advanced through the first round after Sebastian Baez retired. Facing Marin Cilic, a 2017 finalist and winner of three grass-court tournaments, Draper knew the match could be tricky despite the Croatian’s advancing age.
Back in the top 100 and competing at Wimbledon for the first time since 2021, Cilic delivered an outstanding performance with 53 winners, 34 unforced errors, 16 aces, and a 78% first-serve points won. In four sets, the 2014 US Open champion secured his second top-10 win of the year.
At 36, Cilic is steadily climbing back up the rankings, now at No. 74, and will face Jaume Munar for a spot in the tournament’s round of 16.
