WTA 1000 Cincinnati: Gauff in Command, Swiatek Advances to Round of 16 Without Playing
The WTA 1000 in Cincinnati is in full swing with the continuation of the second round this Sunday.
The No. 2 seed, Coco Gauff, made her debut against Xinyu Wang, the player who had defeated her on grass in Berlin back in June. On the fast courts of Cincinnati, Gauff dispatched the Chinese player in straight sets (6-3, 6-2), despite a still-developing serve (8 double faults, 58% first serves).
The two-time Grand Slam champion now moves forward to the tournament's round of 16, where she will face a tough challenge against Dayana Yastremska.
In the top half of the draw, Iga Swiatek won’t need to step onto the court tomorrow for her third-round match. The Polish star was set to face Marta Kostyuk, but the latter, suffering from a right wrist injury, chose to withdraw from the event.
Kostyuk had already been forced to retire in the quarterfinals in Montreal due to the same injury.
Swiatek, now through to the round of 16, will play on Wednesday against either Sorana Cirstea or Yue Yuan.
