WTA 125 Angers: Sönmez ends Monnot's run in the round of 16
One of the four Frenchwomen still in contention at the WTA 125 tournament in Angers was scheduled this Wednesday afternoon in the round of 16. Amandine Monnot, world number 433 and a lucky loser after her defeat in qualifying against Veronika Podrez, had earned the right to play the second round after her victory over Yuriko Miyazaki (6-2, 6-3). This time, it was Zeynep Sönmez, ranked 115th in the WTA, who stood in her way.
Monnot takes a set from Sönmez but falls
The 23-year-old Turk had herself narrowly defeated Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva in the first round (3-6, 7-6, 6-3) and wanted to build confidence to gain momentum in the tournament. Despite a single break in the first set that allowed her to win it, Monnot, 23, could not sustain her level over the long run.
After a set of adjustments, Sönmez, who reached her career-high ranking this season (69th), ultimately prevailed (3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in 1h33). Sönmez advances to the quarterfinals, where she will face Anna-Lena Friedsam, who eliminated Polina Kudermetova (6-3, 1-6, 6-2).
Three Frenchwomen in contention in Angers this Thursday
It is worth noting that Kamilla Rakhimova (who defeated Linda Klimovicova) and Antonia Ruzic (who easily beat Veronika Podrez) have also reached the quarterfinals in recent hours. This Thursday, Chloé Paquet, Océane Dodin, and Fiona Ferro will attempt to qualify for the next stage of the tournament.
As for Monnot, she exits in the second round but is now virtually ranked 405th in the world, marking the best ranking of her career. Until now, her best WTA performance was a 421st place achieved earlier this year.
