"You can be admiring while being authoritative," Mouratoglou discusses his relationship with Osaka
In a video posted on social media, Mouratoglou reflected on his approach to coaching, particularly regarding his player Naomi Osaka. According to him, it is essential to feel admiration for the person you are going to coach:
"I think it’s absolutely necessary to have this admiration for your player because she will feel it every second. There’s no contradiction between being admiring and holding a position of authority at the same time. I believe you can do both: be admiring while being authoritative.
I would never work with a player if I didn’t admire her. If you look at Naomi, whom I work with, I admire her greatly. She’s an incredible player. When I watch her play, I feel immense joy because I love her game. And I think that’s very important. And it doesn’t take away from the authority."
Currently ranked 56th in the world, the Japanese player will begin Wimbledon with one win and two losses on grass. In the first round, she will face Australia’s Gibson (ranked 129th), who came through qualifying.
