Zheng Opens Up About Her Tough Start to the Season: I Stepped Onto the Court With Doubts

Competing in Charleston, where she advanced past the second round yesterday by defeating Maria Sakkari, Qinwen Zheng has had a challenging start to 2025, winning only one match before Indian Wells.

Currently ranked No. 8 in the WTA rankings this week, the Chinese player addressed the reasons behind her below-expectations results in a press conference:

"Over the past twelve months, it’s been a long journey. I’ve fought incredibly hard, but here I am in Charleston with the same ranking as last season. I’m not necessarily better, but I’m not worse either (laughs).

The beginning of the year was very tough for me due to an injury that kept me from being 100% on the court. I stepped onto the court with doubts.

But I fixed that starting at Indian Wells. I no longer have any doubts about my body, and I’m ready to give it my all. All of this helps you grow mentally and win more matches."
