Given the surface and conditions, it is really no surprise that Rafa underperforms here. He likes it hot and dry and outside. And his results in those conditions are unmatched. Yes. He is also at the end of his career. Pushing 37. Don't think he's quite done yet. And I always appreciate his appearance and efforts.

Great season - 2 grand slams (Aussie), great victories over Djokovic. Huge winning streak. Amazing comeback for the Aussie. Just plagued by injury and inconsistencies in the later half.

This was the 8th time in Ruud's career to face top 3 opponent, and this was not just 8th loss, but 20th lost set without any set won.
I understand this match was kind of a extra, unnecessary, unwanted match because he already qualified, and didn't want to spend to much energy... but to have such poor record, and he was match away in this season to become N1, it tells you how weird season it was...
