Tsitsipas Regains Form to Eliminate Müller in the First Round of the US Open

Stefanos Tsitsipas did not arrive in New York under ideal conditions, but the Greek player managed to make the most of his current form to defeat Alexandre Müller (4-6, 6-0, 6-1, 7-6).

With a record of just one win and three losses during the North American warm-up tournaments, Tsitsipas was at his lowest point mentally. The former world No. 3 had also made the significant decision to rehire his father Apostolos as his coach at the end of July.

Playing away from the main courts, as he had been accustomed to until now, the tournament's 26th seed found his footing on the more intimate Court 7 to overcome Müller, despite a shaky start (13 unforced errors in the first set).

Initially challenged by the Frenchman, Tsitsipas then found his rhythm in the next three sets, finishing the match with 41 winners. He displayed an aggressive and precise game, along with a powerful serve (16 aces, 83% of points won behind his first serve).

This victory will undoubtedly boost the confidence of the two-time Grand Slam finalist, who has a modest record of six wins and seven losses at Flushing Meadows. In the second round, he will face the winner of the match between Daniel Altmaier and Hamad Medjedovic.

On his part, Müller concludes a year without a Grand Slam win, having faced tough draws at Roland Garros (Mensik) and Wimbledon (Djokovic).
