"A lot goes through your mind," Sinner reflects on his three missed match points in the Roland-Garros final
Jannik Sinner was so close to winning Roland-Garros. In an utterly wild final, the Italian world No. 1 had three consecutive match points on Carlos Alcaraz’s serve before the Spaniard fought back and ultimately clinched the victory in a fifth-set super tie-break (4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 in 5 hours and 29 minutes).
During the press conference, the world No. 1 reflected on the pivotal moment in the fourth set when he missed his chance to close out the match and lift the Coupe des Mousquetaires.
"When you're playing, you try not to think about the opportunities you’ve had. I tried to erase everything from my memory. In every set of a Grand Slam, you try to start from scratch.
Of course, I was disappointed with what happened in the fourth set—those match points and then serving for the win. But in the end, I stayed in the match, especially mentally. I didn’t give him any free points.
When it’s over, it’s over… It’s a different feeling. A lot goes through your mind. There’s nothing you can do once the match is finished. But when you start a fifth set, the advantage is that you can still change some things," he shared with *The Tennis Letter*, ruefully.
