"A Tough Ending After Such a Strong Tournament," Shelton Reacts to Quarterfinal Exit at Wimbledon

Ben Shelton won’t be reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon. The American, who made it to the semifinals at the Australian Open earlier this season, couldn’t replicate that performance in London.
Facing Jannik Sinner, the world No. 10 gave it his all, but despite hitting 29 winners—including 14 aces—the Italian proved too strong and won in straight sets (7-6, 6-4, 6-4). After a strong run in the tournament, where he defeated Bolt, Hijikata, Fucsovics, and Sonego, Shelton reflected on his exit.
"It was a very tough match. Jannik (Sinner) played really well, much better than I did. It’s a tough way to end what was otherwise a great tournament for me. Today, he felt in top form on the court.
You can’t go into a match expecting your opponent not to be at 100%. I didn’t see any difference in his usual level despite his elbow issue. It’s really frustrating.
Today, I went into the match with a clear game plan. Compared to our match in Australia, I think I played smarter, but my first-serve percentage was lower than I hoped in the moments when I needed it most.
I’m still learning what works best on grass. Today, I think I could have done more to put him under pressure. I’m not satisfied with my Grand Slam results.
Of course, it would be wrong to say I’m not happy with what I’ve achieved on clay and grass this year. I always say I want to take a step forward in big tournaments compared to last year’s results.
That’s what I’ve managed to do in Grand Slams since January. I’m not completely satisfied, but yes, I do feel more confident after the first three Majors of the season.
We’ll see what happens at the US Open. Right now, this loss still stings," Shelton told *Punto De Break* shortly after his elimination.
