Andreeva, Svitolina, and Zheng Advance to Indian Wells Quarterfinals

The first four players to qualify for the quarterfinals in the women's draw of the WTA 1000 at Indian Wells have now been confirmed.
Before rain disrupted the rest of the day on the California courts, Iga Swiatek was the first to secure her spot in the next round after defeating Karolina Muchova (6-1, 6-1).
Later in the evening, three other WTA stars also joined the Final 8 of the 2025 edition. Fresh off her recent title win in Dubai, Mirra Andreeva continued her impressive form.
The 17-year-old Russian player dominated Elena Rybakina (6-1, 6-2). Rybakina struggled, managing only 4 winners against 33 unforced errors in just 1 hour and 5 minutes of play.
This marks the 9th consecutive victory for the world No. 11, who continues to live up to the promise she has shown in recent months. In the quarterfinals, Andreeva will face Elina Svitolina.
The Ukrainian, ranked 23rd in the world, staged a comeback against world No. 4 Jessica Pegula in a match interrupted at the start of the third set (5-7, 6-1, 6-2). Svitolina secures her 21st WTA 1000 quarterfinal, her first since Rome in 2021. She also notched her third win in eight encounters against Pegula, who couldn't maintain her momentum after her title win in Austin last week.
Finally, Zheng Qinwen will also compete on Thursday for a spot in the semifinals. The Chinese player, seeded 8th, wrapped up the day's schedule with a victory over Marta Kostyuk (6-3, 6-2).
The 22-year-old Ukrainian had high stakes in this tournament, having reached the semifinals last year. Ranked 24th in the WTA this week, she will head to the Miami tournament in a few days outside the top 25.
Zheng, meanwhile, sets up a marquee matchup with Swiatek, a rematch of the Paris Olympics semifinal won by the Chinese player.
