Anisimova in the Final Four in Beijing: American Overcomes Paolini in a Rollercoaster Match
Amanda Anisimova managed to defeat Jasmine Paolini in an emotionally charged match.
The last match of the day at the Beijing WTA 1000 pitted Jasmine Paolini against Amanda Anisimova. A spot in the semifinals was at stake in this second duel between the two women.
In 2021, in Parma, the American had won in two sets, but four years later, both players have grown in stature, each having contested two Grand Slam finals.
The start of the match was balanced. Anisimova was the first to break, and she then served for the set at 5-4, but Paolini, continuing her strong form from the BJK Cup finals, did not let go.
She leveled the score before dominating the tiebreak to take the first set (7-4). However, Anisimova did not let her chance slip away in the second set, pulling away to lead 4-0.
Ultimately, it was only logical that the two top-10 players would decide the match in a tense third set. The world No. 4, a finalist in the last two Grand Slams, seemed to have done the hard part when she broke the Italian's serve in the very first game, but the latter came back immediately.
The turning point of the match came at 4-3 for Paolini on Anisimova’s serve. After a 16-minute game and multiple break points saved, the American finally held serve before going on to win the last two games of the match.
She ultimately triumphed in a nail-biting finish (6-7, 6-3, 6-4 in 2 hours and 46 minutes) and advances to the semifinals, where she will face her compatriot Coco Gauff, who earlier in the day defeated Eva Lys for her 10th consecutive win in Beijing.
