At Eastbourne, Fonseca Claims First Grass-Court Victory of His Career

On the Centre Court of Eastbourne, Fonseca faced Bergs in the first round. The two players had never met on the tour before.

After narrowly losing the first set in a tie-break (6-8), Fonseca dominated his opponent in the next two sets, winning 6-0, 6-3, despite Bergs' aggressive play (33 winners). Strong on his first serve (92%), the Brazilian earned no fewer than 12 break points (converting five) throughout the match, which ended 6-7, 6-0, 6-3 in his favor.

At just 18 years old, he secured his first victory in Eastbourne—and, more importantly, his first-ever win on grass since turning pro. After a first-round exit in Halle following three tight sets, the world No. 57 showed no nerves this time as he defeated the Belgian, ranked 50th.

Next up, he will face defending champion Fritz (No. 5) for a spot in the quarterfinals.
