Australia defeat Sweden in Davis Cup
Finalists in the 2024 edition and semi-finalists again last year, each time beaten by Italy, Australia confirms its status as an outsider in this Davis Cup.
Facing Sweden in Stockholm, Lleyton Hewitt's team were aiming to reach the second round of the play-offs.
They did, and in style. Led by their highest-ranked player in the ATP rankings, Australia made no bones about it.
Alex De Minaur, ranked 8th in the world, dominated the returning Mikaël Ymer (7-5, 6-1) to give his country its first point. Aleksandar Vukic followed up with a solid victory over Leo Borg (6-4, 6-4).
The Oceanian nation could thus validate their place in the next round this Saturday, should they win the doubles.
Accustomed to playing together, Matthew Ebden and John Peers took just one set to get the better of their opponents, Swedish players Filip Bergevi and André Goransson (6-7, 6-3, 6-2).
Even before the last two matches, Australia is therefore assured of reaching the second round of the play-offs with three wins to nil.
For a place in the Final 8, Australia will have to overcome the winner of the match between Chile and Belgium.
