Boisson Falls in Her Return to Competition in Cleveland

We last saw Loïs Boisson victorious on the clay courts of Hamburg in July, claiming her very first WTA title.

However, sidelined by a left adductor injury, the French No. 1 had to delay her hard-court debut in the U.S., withdrawing from Montreal and Cincinnati. She planned her return in Cleveland, less than a week before the start of the US Open.

Seeded No. 5 in the tournament, Boisson drew world No. 83 Jil Teichmann in the first round. The Swiss player, also yet to compete during this American swing, was coming off a lost final in Iasi on clay.

Lacking rhythm and sharpness in the first set, the Frenchwoman conceded the break at 4-4. Serving for the set, Teichmann had to save two break points before taking the lead. Boisson responded strongly in the second set with a double break to level the match at one set apiece.

Trailing in the third set, the French player managed to close the gap before faltering on her serve at 5-4, handing her opponent the final game. She ultimately fell 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 after 2 hours and 20 minutes of play.

Eliminated early, Boisson will now have time to prepare for the US Open, which she will contest for the first time in her career. Teichmann, meanwhile, will face Sorana Cirstea for a spot in the quarterfinals.
