For Toni Nadal, Djokovic had the wrong game plan: "He tried a tactic that turned out to be suicidal".
Every week, Toni Nadal, Rafael Nadal's uncle and former coach, publishes a column for our Spanish colleagues at El Pais.
Unsurprisingly, the legendary coach devoted his latest issue to the Wimbledon final between Djokovic and Alcaraz. Alcaraz won the final with great authority (6-2, 6-2, 7-6).
Toni explained that, in his opinion, the Serb had completely miscalculated his tactics, and that this was the main factor that cost him the match: "Knowing that his legs and the precision of his shots are not what they used to be, and that a long, physical match would not be to his advantage either, he tried a tactic that turned out to be suicidal.
He wanted to impose a high tempo, play aggressively, shorten exchanges from the back of the court and, at the slightest opportunity, close out points at the net. He shouldn't have done that.
