Francesca Jones Provides Reassurance After Fainting in Bogota
Earlier this week, spectators at the WTA 250 tournament in Bogota witnessed a frightening scene. Facing Julia Riera in the Colombian tournament, British player Francesca Jones, ranked 129th in the WTA, collapsed as she was preparing to serve late in the third set.
Evacuated in a wheelchair shortly afterward, Jones posted a message on Instagram in recent hours to update her fans after her withdrawal, while she was trailing 5-3 in the final set.
"After winning a tournament in Brazil (in Vacaria), our journey to Colombia took 24 hours, with minimal rest time after a long week. Bogota is known for its altitude, and it often takes several days to adjust to the conditions.
Unfortunately, on Monday, the day of my arrival, we couldn’t train due to rain, which meant that aside from the warm-up before the match, the first time I was exposed to the limited oxygen levels at high intensity was during the first round.
As the match progressed, I worked hard to give myself a chance to stay competitive, trying to adapt to the conditions, but I struggled more and more to cope.
My vision became increasingly blurry until I eventually collapsed, without any cramps appearing. Overnight, we ran several tests, and it seems my heart was working too hard during the day, but fortunately, there will be no long-term impact.
Bogota is one of my favorite tournaments, and I hope to return in 2026 under different circumstances. After a few days of rest, I’ll continue building on the progress I’ve made since the start of the year. Thank you all for your supportive messages," Jones wrote on social media.
