Gasquet, retired since Roland-Garros, replaces Fils at the Hopman Cup
Richard Gasquet can now enjoy a well-deserved retirement. The 39-year-old from Béziers officially ended his career at Roland-Garros.
After winning his first-round match against Terence Atmane, he then fell to the world No. 1 and eventual finalist, Jannik Sinner, in the second round. But the former world No. 7 will have one last dance in an exhibition event.
Indeed, as reported by *L'Équipe* in recent hours, Gasquet will replace Arthur Fils at the upcoming Hopman Cup from July 16 to 20, representing France alongside Chloé Paquet.
Fils, still recovering from the back injury he sustained at Roland-Garros, skipped the entire grass season and now hopes to return for the start of the North American hardcourt swing.
"I haven’t played much since I stopped, I’ve only hit twice. Since Arthur (Fils) isn’t going and it’s an exhibition... We don’t need to be on the official entry lists," Gasquet shared.
"I’m ready to play a few here and there. It’s a chance to play a little. For fun, it’s nice. I don’t miss competition at all—I haven’t been watching much Wimbledon.
"Since Roland, everything’s been going very well for me (smiles). I’ve been doing a lot of sports, mostly soccer, a bit of padel, and golf. I’m doing more sports than ever! But I enjoy soccer the most. I even went to Toulouse to play with the ‘Varietés,’" Gasquet added.
