"Go doubles specialists," Melichar-Martinez

Quips about the US Open mixed doubles format
This Tuesday, spectators at the US Open and tennis fans in general finally got to see one of the major innovations of this end of the season during the final Grand Slam of the year.
During the Fan Week organized this week before the main draws begin in the coming days, mixed doubles inaugurated its new format, and many stars who usually compete in singles were invited to participate.
Defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori are the only pair truly accustomed to doubles tournaments to take part. Beneficiaries of a wild card, the two Italian players managed to qualify for the semifinals with wins against Rybakina/Fritz and Muchova/Rublev, each time in straight sets.
Another player used to doubles, Nicole Melichar-Martinez. The American player, who is not participating in this 2025 edition of mixed doubles, does not seem to appreciate this new format.
On her X account (formerly Twitter), Melichar-Martinez certainly took a jab at the tournament organization with a very explicit message: "Go doubles specialists."
Clearly annoyed by the treatment reserved for professionals in the discipline, Melichar-Martinez, who won the mixed doubles tournament at Wimbledon in 2018 alongside Alexander Peya, thus hopes that the defending champions will confirm their title.
