He realizes that as a British player, Wimbledon isn’t won with forehands or backhands, but with the mind," says Becker about Draper
Considered one of the dark horses for the Wimbledon title, Jack Draper disappointed by being eliminated in the second round by Marin Cilic.
The British world No. 5 failed to impose his game against the 2017 finalist. In the latest episode of the Becker-Petkovic podcast, Boris Becker expressed disappointment with Draper’s performance and his early exit:
"It wasn’t even close. I think he realizes that as a British player, Wimbledon isn’t won with forehands or backhands, but with the mind. There are expectations, and you have to deliver. He spoke as if he admired Andy Murray, saying he had managed to win the tournament once. Yes, great, but he did it because of his attitude, his mentality, his preparation.
Jack Draper should be capable of reaching the second week. He should be among the top 3 or top 4 because that’s what his ranking says. But he has to perform in Grand Slams. He lost in the round of 16 in Paris, and now in the second round at Wimbledon.
That’s not enough to be considered the best player in the world. For the first time, he must ask himself: ‘Why did this happen?’
