"I don't know why he's not playing," McEnroe analyzes the Kyrgios case
In an interview with the Daily Mirror, former American champion McEnroe discussed the situation of 2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios. According to him, the fact that Kyrgios has never truly managed to reach his full potential is deeply frustrating, especially since his situation strongly reminds McEnroe of his own past experiences:
"I’m happy to talk about Nick Kyrgios. If anyone hears me speak about him, it’s in the sense that I’d love to see him play, because he’s one of the most talented guys I’ve ever seen on a tennis court. In any sport, and especially for someone who plays the same sport as me, you’re always trying to maximize—hopefully—what you can achieve.
I didn’t feel like I did that. So you put a lot of pressure on yourself. It’s a shame he hasn’t managed to find a way to do it either. We all struggle with that, but it’s frustrating. Still, I don’t know why he’s not playing."
For context, the Australian has not played an official match since his second-round loss in Miami this year against Khachanov (7-6, 6-0).
