"I don’t want to stop here," Jacquemot reveals her ambitions before facing Bencic at Wimbledon
Elsa Jacquemot has advanced to the second round at Wimbledon. The French player, following her strong performance at Roland-Garros where she was defeated by Loïs Boisson in the round of 16, is continuing her momentum in London.
Facing Magda Linette, the 27th seed, the 22-year-old turned the match around after losing the first set and ultimately triumphed in three sets (6-7, 6-1, 6-4) in the opening round.
After her match and before taking on Belinda Bencic this Thursday for a spot in the third round, Jacquemot—ranked 113th in the world but virtually 100th in the Live Rankings for the first time in her career—reflected on her tournament start in an interview with FFT media.
"It was a really big match. Playing against a seeded player isn’t easy. It’s the first time I’ve won a match in the main draw at Wimbledon. This is already my fourth match here.
I’m really happy, things are going pretty well. Yesterday, I found out I’d broken into the top 100. Of course, I don’t want to stop here—I don’t want to say it’s my goal because it’s not my ultimate objective—but I’m very happy to have entered the top 100.
I’ll prepare for the match against Bencic today (Wednesday). It’s true she’s a player with a lot of experience who plays really well. I’ll discuss with my team how to approach the match.
I’ll stay focused on myself because I think that’s the most important thing. I hope to play, though given the weather, it’s a bit complicated—but it’s cool," Jacquemot said in recent hours.
