"I had so much fun," Venus Williams satisfied despite her elimination in Washington
Venus Williams was stopped in the round of 16 at the WTA 500 tournament in Washington. The American couldn’t build on her first-round victory over Peyton Stearns (6-3, 6-4) and fell to Magdalena Frech (6-2, 6-2), the world No. 24.
At 45 years old, Williams, who hadn’t played a single tournament since Miami last year, still enjoyed herself despite the loss, as she explained in her post-match press conference.
"I just didn’t have any juice left today unfortunately, I tried to find energy but I couldn’t. Four matches in the first week (including singles and doubles), that’s a lot!
I had so much fun, I got to play a lot of matches here, that’s a bonus—I couldn’t be happier with my first week. The good news is I still have control over the points.
The key is to keep the ball in play, and that’s what I didn’t do today. But I know I can play better, and I will play better. I’ve never lost my fitness—you should ask someone who slacks off, that’s not my thing," Williams told RMC Sport.
No need to panic for her fans, as the former world No. 1 will also be in Cincinnati, where she received a wild card to enter the main draw in recent hours.
It was in Ohio that Venus Williams won her last match on tour two years ago against Veronika Kudermetova, before arriving in Washington these past few days and defeating Stearns.
