I want more wisdom and intelligence when it comes to communicating," says Tsitsipas on his father's return as coach
It has been a hectic week for Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Having fallen to 29th in the world rankings, the Greek first ended his collaboration with Goran Ivanisevic, before bringing back his father Apostolos as coach. The latter had left his son's team after fierce tensions in Montreal last year.
Before starting the Toronto Masters 1000, the two-time Grand Slam finalist was interviewed by Ziggo Sport. He first talked about his physical condition:
"I feel good. I have gone through many things these last two weeks, but taking time off the courts has helped me a lot. I've been able to work on my body, and I've met specialists and doctors. Generally, people who can really help me.
I would never have imagined being in this position three weeks ago. I was in very bad shape, especially physically. And when you don't feel well physically, it impacts everything else. I'm happy to be here."
Tsitsipas was obviously questioned about his father's return, as their relationship has often been tumultuous:
"Last year, he got me to a point where I didn't recognize myself. I regret a lot of things, and I won't repeat those mistakes. My reaction and my behavior were immature.
That wasn't me. He made me lose control. Since all that, we have talked a lot, we have spent weeks together. He accompanied me to some tournaments, as a father and not as a coach.
I have to be strict with him because he sometimes likes me to do things his way. I am now trying to rebalance the situation and make him understand that some things need to be done as I wish. This relationship deserves much more than what we have done in the last two years. I want there to be more wisdom, more intelligence when it comes to communicating and to be completely honest.
