Masters 1000 in Toronto: Monfils falls despite four match points, Mpetshi Perricard advances to the second round
Several French players are on the schedule for this first day of competition in Toronto.
On the center court, Gaël Monfils, whose name always attracts the crowd, faced the qualifier Tomas Barrios Vera. In a disjointed match filled with unforced errors (47 for Monfils, 57 for Barrios Vera), it was the Chilean who won 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 in 2h46.
Monfils will regret his four missed match points on his opponent's serve at 5-4, 40-15, and then at 6-5, 40-15. As he left the court, the Frenchman seemed to have made his farewell to the Canadian crowd (see video below).
At the same time, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard was making his debut against Shintaro Mochizuki. The tall French server was on a four-match losing streak since the Stuttgart tournament.
Despite a first serve breakdown (58%), the 45th-ranked player did not fall into the trap and came through in two sets (6-4, 6-2). He will face Holger Rune in the next round.
