Jarry on the Santiago tournament: "There's no reason to come here if you're not South American".
Clay-court tournaments in South America in February sometimes struggle to fit into the calendar, between tournaments played on hard courts before, during and after.
This is particularly true of the ATP 250 Santiago, which takes place in the same week as the Acapulco tournament.
Nicolas Jarry, who is taking part in the tournament, spoke of his fears for its future: "It's good that the circuit is played on clay, because tennis is played on clay in many places.
You can't cement everything. This is the worst week for a tournament: there are two 500s before the Masters 1000 on hard court (Indian Wells).
There's no reason to come here if you're not Chilean or South American. How can we blame them..."
He also mentioned the possibility of the tournament moving to hard court, which had been suggested by the tournament organizers themselves. A solution adopted by the Acapulco tournament several years ago and which proved a success.
"With a change of surface, the tournament would improve 100%".
