Journalist Ben Rothenberg on the Extended Masters 1000 Format: "We Should Savor Monte-Carlo and Paris Tournaments"
Since the format change for the Masters 1000 events implemented in 2023 (Montreal/Toronto and Cincinnati will adopt it this year), expanding from eight to twelve days of competition, Monte-Carlo and Paris are now the only tournaments in this category played over a single week.
This format creates a much tighter draw with 56 players and only eight seeded players receiving a first-round bye.
This obviously makes the early days of competition extremely intense, as journalist Ben Rothenberg expressed on his X (formerly Twitter) account:
"The ATP now has only two Masters 1000 events played over one week: Monte-Carlo and Paris. We should savor them. There’s no filler.
In an extended Masters 1000, a match between Medvedev (No. 11) and Khachanov (No. 29) wouldn’t happen until the third round and would take place on the fifth day of competition."
