Medvedev Wins a Rollercoaster Match Against Khachanov in Monte-Carlo

Daniil Medvedev battled his way into the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000, overcoming Karen Khachanov in a grueling three-set match (7-5, 4-6, 6-4) that lasted 2 hours and 51 minutes.
The world No. 11 made things difficult for himself against an opponent he knows all too well. He had started the match in the best possible way, leading 5-1 with a serve to come. Moments later, however, Khachanov clawed his way back into the set after saving three set points at 5-4.
But Medvedev finally took control at 6-5, converting his fourth opportunity after an hour of play.
Two games away from defeat in the second set (7-5, 4-1), Khachanov took a medical timeout that clearly helped him. Five games later, he leveled the match at one set apiece, capitalizing on Medvedev’s inconsistency on serve.
The intensity ramped up in the third set, and it was ultimately after the 17th break of the match (and the fifth consecutive break of the set) that a cramping Medvedev managed to clinch the victory.
He will now enjoy a much-needed day of rest before facing Alexandre Müller in the second round.
