Purcell reacts to his suspension: "It's devastating news for me".
At the start of this week, the tennis world learned that yet another active player has been suspended for doping. After Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek, it's Australian Max Purcell's turn.
The 105th ranked player in the world has himself admitted to breaking the rules and has been provisionally suspended from December 12, 2024, as confirmed by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) on Monday.
A few hours after this new case was made public, the main interested party expressed himself on Instagram.
"As announced by the ITIA today, I voluntarily accepted a provisional suspension, as I unknowingly received a vitamin infusion above the authorized limit of 100 ml.
Until last week, when I had access to my medical records which confirmed that the amount of vitamins was over 100 ml, I was convinced that I had done everything possible to ensure that I was in compliance with WADA's (World Anti-Doping Agency) methods and regulations," says Purcell.
"Yet I had warned the medical clinic that I was a professional athlete and had to be under the limit.
It's devastating news for me, because I pride myself on being an athlete who always makes sure everything is safe for WADA.
I voluntarily passed on the information to the ITIA, trying to be as transparent as possible so that this matter will soon be behind me.
I'm looking to the future with the hope of returning to the courts very soon", he concluded.
