Rybakina after her victory against Andreescu: "It's normal that I'm not yet at my best level on clay"
As part of the final match of the second round of the WTA 1000 in Madrid this Friday evening, Elena Rybakina dominated the returning Bianca Andreescu (6-3, 6-2). The world No. 11 prevailed over the Canadian for the third time in as many encounters, not dropping a single set against the 2019 US Open champion. On court after her victory, the Kazakh player reflected on her performance.
"It’s always a great moment to return to the center court here in Madrid. The first matches in these kinds of tournaments are always tricky, and it’s always tough to face Bianca. I’m very happy to have managed to win today.
This is only my first match of the season on clay, so it’s normal that I’m not yet at my best level on this surface. I’m looking forward to playing my next match.
We know each other well, I know she’s had several injuries lately and is just coming back. But I also knew she would do everything to try to make me run and change the rhythm of the match. Still, I tried to focus on myself, on my serve, and on staying aggressive.
At times, it worked, and at others, it didn’t. I hope to improve and be even better in the next round," Rybakina assured the WTA media after her victory against Andreescu.
Indeed, the Kazakh player will aim to reach the round of 16 in her match against Elina Svitolina. She leads three wins to two against the Ukrainian and won their last two encounters at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon last year.
