Shapovalov Triumphs in Los Cabos After Victory in Final Against Kovacevic

From Saturday night to Sunday, the stage was set for the grand final of the ATP 250 tournament in Los Cabos between Aleksandar Kovacevic and Denis Shapovalov. Notably, this marked the first time since the 2019 ATP Finals (Tsitsipas vs. Thiem) that a final featured two one-handed backhands competing on the main tour.
In excellent form during the tournament, the Canadian had only conceded 12 games on his path to the final and entered as the favorite. However, the American, who had eliminated top seed Andrey Rublev in the semifinals, was not to be underestimated.
But Shapovalov, ranked 33rd in the world, seemed on a mission this week in Mexico. Impressive against Nanda, Schoolkate, and Walton, he concluded his tournament in the best possible way by dominating Kovacevic in straight sets (6-4, 6-2 in 1 hour and 14 minutes).
With only 18 games lost across four matches, Shapovalov controlled the final (15 winners to 7, 6 aces, three breaks, and just one break point conceded on his serve) and sealed his victory with a final ace to claim the fourth title of his career after Stockholm 2019, Belgrade 2024, and Dallas 2025.
With this win, Shapovalov also becomes the sixth player to win multiple titles on the ATP Tour this season, joining Carlos Alcaraz (5 titles), Jannik Sinner (2), Taylor Fritz (2), Félix Auger-Aliassime (2), and Flavio Cobolli (2). The 26-year-old Shapovalov now heads into the North American Masters 1000 events—leading up to the US Open at the end of August—with renewed confidence.
