"As one-handed backhand players, we have to stick together," Shapovalov's message to Kovacevic after the Los Cabos final
This Sunday, very early in the morning, Denis Shapovalov claimed the fourth title of his ATP career. At the Los Cabos tournament, the Canadian—who will climb back to No. 28 in the rankings next week—concluded his flawless run with a victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic.
This also marks the first time since the 2019 ATP Finals that two one-handed backhand players have faced each other in a final on the main tour. During the trophy ceremony, the 26-year-old had a few words for Kovacevic, who fell short in his first career final.
"I’d like to congratulate Aleksandar (Kovacevic) on an amazing week. He beat some really great players. Honestly, I didn’t watch your match against Andrey (Rublev) yesterday, but my coach told me you played unbelievable tennis.
I think you’re a really great player, I love your game. Of course, as one-handed backhand players, we have to stick together. But no matter what, I love watching you play," Shapovalov concluded for ATP media after his triumph in Mexico.
