Arthur Fils's run in Rotterdam came to an end in the second round on Thursday. Following his victory over compatriot Constant Lestienne in his opening match, the Frenchman was pitted against German lucky loser Daniel Altmaier, who took advantage of Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard's last-minute withdrawal.
After knocking out Aleksandar Kovacevic, the German continued his winning ways.
Faced with a Son who hadn't shown his best form in this tournament, he won the first set, but the Frenchman didn't let up and logically broke away in the second.
In the decisive set, Fils gained the upper hand to quickly take his opponent's serve, but Altmaier came back.
After four match points at 4-5 on the Frenchman's serve, Altmaier saw his opponent come back, but in the end it was all over.
With Fils serving for a decisive tie-break, Altmaier had two more match points, and won on his sixth opportunity (6-4, 3-6, 7-5). He will meet Alex De Minaur, who defeated Jakub Mensik earlier in the day (6-4, 6-4).
Injured in the thigh in this match, Fils, who called in the physio during the match, is expected to take part in the Marseille tournament next week to bounce back.
