Stats: US Open Records Highest Number of Fifth-Set Tie-Breaks Since 1970
During the first two rounds of the 2025 US Open, six men's matches went to a tie-break in the fifth set. This is a significant number, something that hasn't happened in the tournament since 1970.
Among these matches were those between Blanchet and Mensik (second round, 10-7), Schoolkate and Sonego (first round, 10-6), and Cobolli and Brooksby (second round, 10-3).
Additionally, American player Nakashima (30) went to a tie-break in the final set in both of his matches played at Flushing Meadows this year. In the first round against De Jong (10-7) and then against Kym (10-8).
It is worth noting that only two Grand Slams in history have had more tie-breaks in their first two rounds. Both times in Australia: the 2020 edition (7) and the 2024 edition (8).
