Iga Swiatek cleared the first-round hurdle at Wimbledon. After reaching her first career grass-court final on the main tour at the WTA 500 tournament in Bad Homburg, the Polish player, who climbed back into the top 4 thanks to her run in Germany, now hopes to make a strong showing at Wimbledon, where her best result so far was a quarterfinal appearance in 2023.

Facing Polina Kudermetova in the opening round, the eighth-seeded Swiatek was efficient in the match. She saved one break point and converted 100% of her opportunities to break her opponent’s serve.

After a tight first set, the 24-year-old player pulled away in the second set. In the end, she secured a straight-sets victory (7-5, 6-1 in 1 hour and 8 minutes) and advanced to the second round, where she will face Catherine McNally, who defeated Jodie Burrage (6-3, 6-1).

"Playing in this heat, I’m glad to see some clouds coming in. I wasn’t sure how I’d survive it! In tennis, we have to be ready for rain, heat, and everything else—especially here in Britain, as you’ve seen," Swiatek joked on court shortly after securing her 34th WTA tour win of the season.

Since February 2022 and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Ukrainian sport has been heavily affected by human, structural and economic losses. Tennis has, of course, not been spared. While Ukrainian athletes have had to rethink their entire organization, an entire country, behind the scenes, has had to adapt and change its training conditions. This extends all the way to the highest level, where professional players have spoken out, trying as best they can to help their nation.

As a laboratory for tomorrow’s tennis, does the Next Gen Masters have a future?

Conceived as a bold bet to prepare for the post–Big 3 era, the Next Gen Masters has shaken up the codes of modern tennis. A pioneering, visionary tournament, but now in search of an identity.

Omnipresent cameras, line judges on the verge of extinction, mistakes that persist nonetheless: technology fascinates as much as it divides. Tennis, at a crossroads, is still searching for its balance between progress and emotion.

As we move to the end of this month and also closing out the year I am wishing all of those following me a Merry Christmas and a Happy/Healthy New Year.

Let's make that wish for all 2000 plus players hoping for 5 wins each day. Hoping ŵhen we open the results page to see all green, and no red. And especially NO CANCELED matches.

From me and my rotti JAZ, I bid you all good night, and see you in...

why did tennis tonic void predictions on the match between Chwalinska and Huergo at the Quito tournament? The match was played to completion and on time. If TT feels the match is one sided, and of course it was, then don't put it up for prediction. This is getting irritating.

The finals are here, and we scramble for the best finish. I've been chasing "King" all year and I was able to shrink the spread a little. Skelp is also closing the gap.

Seasons best to all the regulars in our league.

Will you all be back in the new year.?

Steffi Graf completed a Golden Slam (not just a career Grand Slam) when she was 19. She is the only person to accomplish that, winning the four majors plus Olympic gold the same calendar year.
