Swiatek responds to criticism: "I'm annoyed by headlines talking about collapse or mental crisis"
Present in Rome for the final WTA 1000 on clay, Swiatek was questioned by journalists about the responsibility of her coaching team, including Wim Fissette and sports psychologist Daria Abramowicz, in her recent losses. The Polish player also addressed the criticism she received following her suspension:
"No, that’s a very harsh and unfair statement. The poor results coincided with many other challenges over the past few months, including in my family life. I found myself at a stage in my career where I had to redefine my self-image. The level of world tennis is getting higher and higher. The girls have learned about my game, they’ve improved.
People don’t know this, but practically every year, there are different challenges. When I was suspended, I didn’t want to step onto the court for a few weeks. It was the toughest experience of my career. Daria is a constant support for me, someone I trust. This is my team, and I decide who’s part of it.
I’m annoyed by headlines talking about collapse or mental crisis. Of course, I sometimes get frustrated on the court. Sometimes, I’m not as focused as I’d like to be. But I’m working, day after day, week after week, to improve. So there’s no reason to make strange judgments or look for fatigue or burnout," she said in comments reported by Tennis Up To Date.
