Wawrinka Defeats Popyrin in the Second Round of the Aix-en-Provence Challenger
Wawrinka overcame Popyrin (3-6, 6-3, 6-1) in the second round of the Aix-en-Provence Challenger 175.
While Popyrin served exceptionally well to take the first set 6-3, the Australian faltered in efficiency over the next two sets. Meanwhile, the Swiss player converted half of his break points (4/8) to secure the win after 1 hour and 52 minutes of play.
Wawrinka had previously suffered first-round exits in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona. After defeating Blanchet in the previous round, the 40-year-old continues his run in the French tournament and will face American Basavareddy in the quarterfinals.
Registered for the Roland-Garros qualifiers, many hope to see the 2015 champion receive a wildcard this year.
