"We never had this problem with the women players," McEnroe discusses the drought in American men's tennis at Grand Slams
In an interview shared by Tennis Up To Date, former champion McEnroe reflected on the nearly 20-year drought in American men's tennis, with the last Grand Slam singles winner being Andy Roddick at the US Open in 2003.
"We need to make sure American players win major tournaments. It would make things much more exciting if Tiafoe or Tommy Paul could pull it off. We never had this issue with the women, but we do with the men, and I think it's a real problem for us."
Indeed, on the women's side, in recent years, players like Keys (Australia 2025) and Gauff (US Open 2023) have stood out, not to mention tennis legend Serena Williams with her 23 majors, who was the driving force of American tennis for over fifteen years.
