Wimbledon 2025: A 21-year-old Grand Slam record matched in men's draw after first round
This start of Wimbledon has delivered many surprises in the men's draw. As the first round concluded on Tuesday evening, an unprecedented number of seeded players have already fallen on the London grass.
Thirteen players ranked among the tournament's top 32 were defeated in their opening matches, marking a record since Grand Slams introduced 32 seeds at Roland Garros in 2001.
Alexander Zverev, Lorenzo Musetti, Holger Rune, Daniil Medvedev, Francisco Cerundolo, Ugo Humbert, Alexei Popyrin, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Denis Shapovalov, Alexander Bublik, Alex Michelsen, Tallon Griekspoor, and Matteo Berrettini will not compete in the second round in the British capital. This ties the record set at the 2004 Australian Open.
Notably, this record could even be extended on Wednesday. The final first-round match, which could not be completed, pits 29th seed Brandon Nakashima against Bu Yunchaokete. The American led two sets to one when play was suspended due to darkness but has not yet fully secured his spot in the second round.
