At 36, Cilic reaches Wimbledon's round of 16 for the first time since 2017
Marin Cilic’s tennis remains just as effective on the grass of Wimbledon, even at 36 years old.
After defeating Jack Draper two days ago in one of the biggest upsets of the tournament’s first week, the Croatian had to confirm his form against Jaume Munar, who achieved his best career result at Wimbledon.
With 49 winners to 51 unforced errors, along with 14 aces and solid break point conversion (5/8), Cilic prevailed in a 3-hour, four-set battle (6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4). On Monday, he will compete in the tournament’s round of 16 for the seventh time in his career and the first time since 2017.
His next opponent will be Flavio Cobolli, who reached the second week by comfortably defeating Jakub Mensik (6-2, 6-4, 6-2).
